Tips for Riding E-bike in a Wet Condition

As riders, we often find ourselves at the mercy of ever-changing weather conditions. While cruising along under a clear blue sky is undoubtedly exhilarating, we must also be prepared to face the challenges presented by rain-soaked roads. Riding in wet conditions requires a unique set of skills and precautions to ensure both our safety and the longevity of our motorcycles. In this article, we will explore some valuable tips and techniques that will empower you to master the wet ride and conquer any rainy day.

Riding an ebike in the rain is the same as a normal bike except…

Is it ok to ride or drive in the rain with your e-bike?

The short answer is yes. The motor and battery are sealed.
Like anything else, there are a few “do’s” and one “don’t” you should keep in mind (this includes flooding if your ebike is stored in a hazardous area).

Preparing for the Deluge

When it comes to riding in wet conditions, preparation is key. Here are some essential steps to take before hitting the road:

1.1 Choosing the Right Gear: Discover the importance of investing in quality rain gear, including waterproof jackets, pants, and gloves. Ensure your gear provides protection while allowing for breathability and comfort.

1.2 Checking Tire Tread and Pressure: Explore the significance of proper tire maintenance in wet weather. Learn how to inspect tire tread depth and adjust tire pressure to enhance traction and minimize the risk of hydroplaning.

1.3 Applying Rain Repellents: Uncover the benefits of using rain repellent products on your visor and windscreen. These treatments can significantly improve visibility by repelling water and preventing it from obstructing your view.

1.4 Maintaining Brake Performance: Understand the importance of ensuring your brakes are in optimal condition. Learn how to assess brake pad wear, check brake fluid levels, and keep your braking system in top shape for reliable stopping power in wet conditions.

1.5 Adjusting Riding Techniques: Discover how to adapt your riding style for wet weather. From adjusting throttle control to altering your cornering techniques, these adjustments will help you maintain stability and control on slippery surfaces.

Conquering the Wet Road

Now that you’re prepared, let’s dive into the main topic of conquering the wet road. Here are some strategies to help you navigate safely and confidently through rainy conditions:

2.1 Smooth and Progressive Inputs: Learn the importance of applying smooth and gradual inputs, such as throttle, brake, and steering. Abrupt actions can lead to loss of traction, while gentle maneuvers enhance stability and grip.

2.2 Maintaining a Steady Pace: Discover why maintaining a steady pace is crucial when riding in the rain. Avoid sudden accelerations or decelerations, as these can disrupt tire contact with the road and increase the chances of skidding.

2.3 Avoiding Puddles and Standing Water: Understand the hazards of riding through puddles and standing water. Learn how to identify safe paths and minimize the risk of hydroplaning by maintaining a consistent speed and gently rolling over wet surfaces.

2.4 Using Proper Cornering Techniques: Master the art of cornering in wet conditions. Explore techniques such as early apexing, reducing lean angles, and gradual throttle application to maintain control and stability throughout the turn.

2.5 Keeping a Safe Distance: Emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. Increased following distance allows for better visibility, reaction time, and minimizes the risk of collision due to reduced traction in wet conditions.

White lines, metal tracks and potholes. Very slippery in the wet. Also look out for places where there may be oil or petrol, mud and leaf matter on the road and avoid.
Deep puddles and potholes. If there is or has been running water its hard to know whats in them or whether they have changed. For example, walk across a creek if you have to (and can) vs ride. Best to not even try it if its fast flowing water.

Do not ride in water that will submerge the motor and battery, and do not leave the e-bike in water.

Under no circumstances is it recommended to ride in deep water, whether you ride an e-bike or not. However, if you have no other choice, we recommend that you turn off the power before riding (or walking) without it.
Unfortunately, once you’re through, you don’t know if water has gotten into your motor or battery housing. Therefore, to be on the safe side, we recommend that you do not turn the power back on until you are sure the water has dried up, or you risk a short circuit. This may mean completing the ride without the power on.
Similar principles should be followed for storing your e-bike. Avoid placing your e-bike where it could be flooded. If it is submerged, there is a high risk that water will seep into the motor, display and battery housing. Although the water will slowly dry out, damage caused by rust, etc., may be irreversible.

Clean bike and battery points

A quick clean of your e-bike after a ride in the rain only takes a few minutes, but can pay dividends on your repair bills later.
A wipe down will clean the bike and help you spot if there is any damage, but there are two things that can make a difference. Those two things are
Clean and re-lubricate the chain and drivetrain. If you don’t like brittle or slipping gears, then this is a must. Check out #5 Rear Wheel, Chain and Gears in our E-Bike M Check for more information.
Battery Contact Points. If you are concerned about dirt around the battery then remove the battery, wipe it down with a clean soft cloth and then clean the contact points with contact cleaner.
If the bike is very wet and you are concerned about water getting into the battery contact points then use a leaf blower to disperse the water after removing the battery. Leave the battery off the bike for a few hours to allow the system to dry out completely.
Riding an e-bike in the rain can be fun
Rainy days, even if they are rainy, are no reason to stop riding. In fact, riding in the rain can be fun, especially if you don’t have an accident or damage your e-bike!
We hope these tips will make your next (rainy) ride as enjoyable as a sunny one.
