How to Make my E Mountain Bike Go Faster

Electric bikes have been well-known as a new green means of transportation, taking place of gas-fueled vehicles. Despite the truth that they are efficient and produce zero carbon emissions, they can not run as fast as a vehicle. However, it couldn’t be the reason that you give up buying an ebike as it is possible for you to make electric bikes for adults go faster than you expect. So, let’s get to the topic directly.

How to make an ebike faster

Our electric bikes are powered by electric motors. There are some basic physics at work with the motor that governs how fast your ebike can go. This also affects what we can do to make an ebike go faster. Some electric bikes have speed limiters programmed into them. Some of these can be turned off to easily make your bike go faster.

A word of caution. Most things you can do to increase the speed of an electric bike are probably going to void the warranty and may make it illegal to ride on the roads where you are. You may also increase the power beyond what the bike was designed for. This may lead to burned out electronics, going to fast for the breaks, etc… Adventure Gear Insider is not responsible for any damage you do to your bike or yourself trying to make your ebike faster.

Simple ways to make your e-bike faster

1. Program the Settings

As I mentioned above, most ebikes for sale will come with speed limiters, restricting the max speed your ebikes can go up to. This is all for your safety and allows you to adjust the speed according to local regulations.

However, no matter what kind of speed limiters your ebikes have, they must be designed to be adjustable. Taking HOTEBIKE as an example, we can get into the menu of the display to program the speed limit. It can go from the highest speed of 28 mph to the lowest one off 8 mph, meeting different speed requirements.

2. Stay charged up

A battery that is at a higher state of charge has a higher voltage.  So higher voltages = higher speeds.

By keeping your battery at a higher state of charge, you’ll inherently travel faster.

This means that you’ll want to charge more frequently, perhaps after every trip, instead of stringing multiple trips together on the same charge. A good way to do this is to pick up an inexpensive charger to keep at work or wherever you often commute to during the day. That way you can stay charged up for your return trip.

3. Change your Tires

If your ebikes come with off-road or mountain ebike tires, then you can swap them out to road tires. Basically, road tires are smoother and have lower rolling resistance. If your ebikes got knobby tires, you can just change them to slick ones. With less rolling resistance, the speed of your ebike will reach a higher level.

4. Add more air to the tires

Adding more air to your e-bike tires will reduce their rolling resistance. It will increase the diameter of the wheels meaning you go a little bit farther with each wheel rotation. This will make your electric bike a little bit faster. The downside is that the ride quality will get rougher. You will feel cracks in the pavement more. You will have less traction from over inflated tires as well.

 5. Swap to a higher voltage battery

Since motor speed is voltage dependent, using a higher voltage battery is the quickest way to substantially increase your speed. However, before you upgrade your 36V battery to 48V, for example, you’ll want to check that your controller can handle the increased voltage (most can accept slight over-volting). If you don’t feel comfortable checking the voltage rating of your controller (usually written on the capacitors) then check with the manufacturer. Do not just swap out your battery without checking – you could risk frying your controller if it can’t handle the higher voltage.

Also, note that any battery meter you currently have likely won’t read accurately anymore unless you swap that out for a new meter of appropriate voltage.

In conclusion

Remember that with great speed comes great responsibility. Obey traffic laws. Wear a helmet. And please don’t attempt to do anything on your e-bike that you don’t feel comfortable with or aren’t prepared to handle.

As much fun as it can be to go fast, at the end of the day, sometimes it can be nice to simply slow down and enjoy the ride.
